Asheville, NC. — The Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team travelled to UNC Asheville to play their third Division 1 school of the season on Tuesday afternoon. After a lot of tight matches, the lady lions fell against the Bulldogs – 5-2.
The Lady Lions were ready to play their last match at a Division 1 level of the season and entered the courts with a different mindset compared to their previous matches and were much more determined. Unfortunately, after a good fight on all the courts, the Lady Lions were not able to defeat the Bulldogs.
Number 2 doubles composed of junior, Maria Raich and freshman Lauren Castillon faced strong opponents and struggled to find their game style. After a tough match, #2 double lost 6-2.
#1 double composed by both seniors Chloe O'Connor and Fantine Botella also faced solid opponents. The senior duo had a good beginning with aggressive volleys from Chloe and solid forehand from Fantine, but unfortunately this was not enough, and they could not defeat the number 1 bulldog couple.
Double #3 composed by Katharina Kiderlen and Marta Rozados had a different scenario and found a solution to challenge the Bulldogs. Thanks to Marta's consistent serve and offensive volleys from Katharina, the newly comprised doubles team managed to outscore their opponents and win 7-6 (7-3).
After two losses in doubles, the Lady Lions were now down 1-0 but did not give up and kept their heads held high for their singles.
On court 3, Marta Rozados was the first one to drop her match, her solid shots from the baseline were not enough to bother her opponent and lost 6-0, 6-0.
Single #2 played by Pearllan Cipriano followed a few minutes later. Pearllan's consistency was not enough today against a player who was often going to the net. Cipriano dropped her match 6-3, 6-1.
Maria Raich playing #4 fought hard today and played offensive tennis. After a first tough set, Maria was down 6-3 as she could not find solutions against a solid opponent. The second set was a different scenario, and she managed to find her opponent's weakness and made the match tighter. With a 4-3 lead for Raich in the second, her opponent came back stronger and ended the match with a win of 6-3, 7-5.
Single number 1 was played by Fantine Botella. The first set was tight as both players were holding their serve, but at 5-4 Botella did not manage to hold her serve and lost 6-4. In the second set Botella adopted a different strategy and was playing more aggressive which gave trouble to her opponent and Botella won the second set 6-3. In the third and final set, Fantine's opponent changed her game style, challenging Botella and closing the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Playing number 6 was Victoria Silva who did not have any trouble during her match playing with an aggressive game style and a strong serve. She won her first set 6-2 and her opponent retired because of a wrist injury.
The match of the day was played by freshman Lauren Castillon at the position number 5. Today was her third match at the collegiate level and she felt much stress in the first set as she was holding her shots. She lost the first set 6-3. The second set was a new beginning for her, she overcame her nerves and played freely with an aggressive and consistent game style. Lauren easily won the second set without aby trouble, 6-1. The third set was a tie breaker of 10 points, and with a lead of 9-0 Lauren was played smart and finally finished 10/2. Today was her first win in collegiate level but also made history by being the first Emmanuel College tennis player to win at a Division 1 level.
The Lady Lions finished the day with an 5-2 loss against UNC Asheville.
EC's Women's Tennis Team will travel to Hickory, North Carolina on Saturday, February 16th to play Lenoir Rhyne University, their first Division 2 school of the season.
