FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga - The Emmanuel College women's basketball team took on the number 1 team in Conference Carolinas, the Belmont Abbey Crusaders, on Monday night. The Lions fell to the Crusaders 81-70, moving their record to 11-6 overall and 8-3 in conference.
Emmanuel got off to a quick start, scoring 6 unanswered points in the first 90 seconds of the game. Belmont Abbey regrouped throughout the rest of the quarter, but the first 10 minutes ended with Emmanuel leading, 18-15.
In the second quarter, the Crusaders outscored the Lions by 4, giving them a one point lead heading into halftime, 36-35.
The Lions went cold from beyond the arc in the second half, going 1-7 on three point attempts. On the other side of the court, the Crusaders were heating up. Maria Kuhlman sank 5 consecutive threes in the third quarter for Belmont Abbey, allowing them to take control of the game. By the end of the third quarter, Belmont Abbey was on top 60-49.
The Lions never managed to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. They were particularly hindered by their rebounding performance, only capturing 22 throughout the game. Belmont Abbey dominated under the rim with more than twice as many rebounds, totaling 46. With the Lions unable to gain momentum in the final quarter, the Crusaders went on to win by 11 points, 81-70.
The Lions were led by junior Morgan Simmons who put up 15 points for the Lions.
The Crusaders shot 48.8% from the field and 50% from beyond the three point line. The Lions were unable to keep up, shooting 45% from the field and 27.8% from beyond the arc.
Next up, women's basketball will take on North Greenville University on Wednesday, January 22.
