AIKEN, S.C. - The Emmanuel College women's basketball team defeated the University of South Carolina Aiken 67-65 on Tuesday night. This win brings the Lions record to 4-3 overall, 1-0 in conference.
Junior transfer Morgan Simmons led the Lions with a season high 20 points, including 12 from behind the arc. Junior Breanna Locke put up 15 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Junior Brooke Whitaker knocked down five of her eight attempts, including two three-pointers en route to a 15 point performance.
The Lions found themselves tied 8-8 before a 9 point run from the Pacers began to create separation. A late first quarter three-pointer from Valeriya Pokrovskaya would put the Lions at 11-17.
A jump shot from Simmons and Hope Forrester would put the Lions back within two points in the second quarter. As action continued, the Pacers continued to hold the lead. EC trailed 27-35 at halftime.
With three minutes remaining in the third quarter, a free throw from Mari Jonassen would put the Lions within 1 point of the Pacers. Whitaker followed up with a shot from downtown to steal the lead. Two more free throws from Simmons combined with two points each from Locke and Whitaker would help the Lions close out the third quarter with a 53-52 lead.
As action continued into the fourth quarter, a solid team effort from the Pacers would help them pull ahead by two. EC would rally back with a jump shot from Mari Jonassen and Breanna Locke to tie the score up, 62-62. Simmons game high 20th point would come next to put the Lions ahead one last time. EC would hold the lead and capture the victory, 67-65.
EC ended the night with a 43.3% field goal percentage and 33 rebounds.
The Lions continue action on the road Thursday, December 12th against conference opponent Barton College.
