Central, SC - The Emmanuel College soccer Lions took on the Southern Wesleyan Warriors on Tuesday night. Emmanuel went into the game with a well organized game plan, and it could not have gone any better as the Lions won the game convincingly in the end.
The Lions soaked up some pressure early on as the Warriors tried their best to penetrate the Emmanuel. The Lions took the lead in the 23rd minute when Morgan Anders got on the end of a through ball from Craig Russell, Anders best the oncoming defender before firing the ball home.
Emmanuel doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Martin Mitreski noticed the Warriors keeper off his line and fired home a terrific shot from 40 yards. The Lions added a third in the 39th minute when Jordan Davis broke free and finished calmly. Ryan Elswick added a fourth for Emmanuel in the 41st minute when his free kick found the top corner from the edge of the box. The Lions would go into the half with a 4-0 lead.
The Lions faced a different team in the second half as Southern Wesleyan came out looking to get back into the game. Emmanuel held their shape well and limited the Warriors attack. However, the Warriors found the net in the 72nd minute as Marcelo Vargas found the net from a cross at the near post. This would prove to be Southern Wesleyan's only goal as Emmanuel seen the game though for a 4-1 victory.
Coach Borchers had this to say after the game, "I was really happy with our team performance tonight. The boys were disciplined and executed the game plan in a fantastic way. We will enjoy this and then start focusing on our next opponent."
The win moves the Lions to 3-3 and 2-2 in conference play.
The Lions are on the road again on Saturday as they take on Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm.
