FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.- The Emmanuel College Soccer Lions took on longtime rivals Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday night. It would prove to be another intense matchup between the two teams.
The Lions started the game very well as they soaked up the pressure from the visiting Warriors. It was clear that the strong defensive performance from Emmanuel was frustrating Southern Wesleyan as they were forced to shoot from distance. Neither side had any clear scoring opportunities in the first half so both teams would go into the half scoreless.
The second half started very much like the first with Emmanuel soaking up the pressure and causing the Warriors a few problems on the counter attack. The best scoring opportunity fell to Emmanuel's Martin Mitreski but his low shot in the box was excellently saved by the Southern Wesleyan goalkeeper.
The deadlock was eventually broken via a free-kick in the 83rd minute by Southern Wesleyans Bruno Liozzi. This would prove to be the game winning goal as Emmanuel pressed hard in the closing minutes but were unable to find the equalizing goal.
Coach Borchers had this to say after the game "I was very happy with the discipline the guys showed and passion they played with. We are struggling to score right now, but when that piece comes together we will be in a great place. The good thing to see is we are still making progress at this stage of the season."
The Lions are in action again on Tuesday night as they travel to Gaffney, South Carolina to take on Limestone College.
