Lions Beat Bobcats 16-15 in OT Thriller

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Emmanuel College men's lacrosse team moved to 2-1 in Conference Carolinas after an overtime thriller over Lees-McRae.

On a sunny day at EC, the Lions claimed home field advantage for the first time in the 2019 campaign. Ethan Brundage took charge early between the pipes for the Lions notching his first save of the game within a minute of the opening whistle. Lees-McRae would claim the first goal of the contest, followed shortly by Matthew Mitchell who tied it up 1-1. Less than a minute later, Kylon Collins scored unassisted to give EC the lead. Shamaz Durrant would score one followed by three from Alex Stull. The Lions powered through the first 15-minutes up 6-2.

Lees-McRae scored one early in the second followed by a six-minute lull in scoring. The Lions would go on a three goal run to stop the drought with scoring from Stull, Travis Brave Heart, and Collins. Stull would claim one final goal as time expired to put EC up 10-4 at the half.

The teams exchanged defensive stands until the Bobcats scored two with less than six-minutes left to play in the third. Allan Velasquez found Stull to keep the Lions lead at 11-6. Another pair of goals for Lees-McRae would close the gap, but Velasquez found the net on his own to end the quarter Lions leading 12-8.

The Bobcats capitalized on an early fourth quarter turnover to score which was the first of a three-goal run for Lees-McRae as they closed in with in one. It was Stull who once again scored for Emmanuel off of another pass from Velasquez. The teams would exchange goals to the final second when the Bobcats pushed it into overtime at 15-15.

Both teams would get extra man opportunities in the overtime period but neither could convert. With a little more than a minute left, Matthew Mitchell hit a cutting Alex Stull for the finisher, Lions claim their first overtime win since 2014. Emmanuel is now 2-1 in conference play after taking down Lees-McRae and Chowan.

Standout Performance

Alex Stull scored eight goals on ten shots against the Bobcats. 

Allan Velasquez led the team in assists with five while also scoring one of his own.
