Men's Basketball Knocks Out Barton to Advance to Conference Carolinas Semifinals
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga - The #3 Emmanuel men's basketball team began postseason play by hosting #6 Barton College in the quarterfinals of the 2020 Conference Carolinas playoffs. The Lions defeated the Bulldogs, 86-75, advancing them to the semifinal game on Saturday, March 7th where they will take on #2 Belmont Abbey College.
The Lions took the early lead as junior Brandon Simpson knocked down a 3-pointer to reach 1,000 career points. The Bulldogs caught the Lions and the two teams matched each other point-for-point over the next ten minutes. The Lions pulled away by 6 points, 21-15, but the Bulldogs fought their way ahead by halftime. After 20 minutes of play, the Bulldogs led the Lions, 32-30.
The Bulldogs carried their momentum into the second half, controlling the first 10 minutes as they built an 8 point lead, 47-55. With just under 10 minutes to play, a remarkable turn of events took place for the Lions. After freshman Eric Jones had a 3 point play, converting the free throw after getting fouled on a layup, the Lions forced 3 consecutive turnovers on a full court press as the Bulldogs struggled to get the ball inbounded. The turnovers led to an incredible 16 point run for Emmanuel, primarily led by freshman KJ Jones, as the home-team crowd got electric. The drastic turnaround gave the Lions the lead, 63-57 with seven minutes remaining in the game. After a media timeout, the Bulldogs scored 5 straight, bringing them back within 1 point, 63-62. But the Lions took command once again with a 13-3 run over the next 5 minutes, giving them a double-digit lead with two minutes left in the game. The Bulldogs couldn't respond as Emmanuel went on to win by 11 points, 86-75.
The Lions were led by KJ Jones, who scored the majority of his 27 points in the second half as he led the charge for Emmanuel. Jones also recorded 6 rebounds. Sophomore Michael Wright followed with 15 points and 7 rebounds, converting 5/11 from beyond the arc.
The Lions shot 42.6% from the field, 46.2% from 3-point territory, and 84.2% from the line. The Bulldogs shot 38% from the field, 23.1% from beyond the arc, and 85.7% from the line.
