NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS CANCELED

Geneva, OH – The Emmanuel College Men's swimming team was participating in the National Championships this past week, March 11-14, 2020.

 

Day 1 Finals: In the 50 free, Igor Dantas finished 11th overall (20.02) earning NCAA All-American (honorable mention) Joao Santos finished 18th (20.16). In the 200 medley relay (Rosa, Santos, Dantas, Sobers) finished 5th overall (1:26.42) earning Emmanuel's first NCAA All-American relay (also in school record time). After Day 1, the Lions were in 10th place with 34 points.

 

Day 2 Prelims: On Thursday morning, due to COVID-19 concerns, the National Championships continued with no spectators allowed. The Lions swam very well and were in position to contend for national championship titles in 3 events in finals that night. The 200 free relay (Rosa, Santos, Dantas, Sobers) qualified 5th (1:19.87) in a new school record. In the 200 free, Alex Sobers qualified 2nd (1:35.88). In the 400 medley relay (Rosa, Santos, Dantas, Sobers) qualified 2nd (3:11.81) in a new school record.

 

On Thursday afternoon, while the team was headed to finals, the NCAA informed all teams that the National Championships had been canceled, due to COVID-19 concerns.

Before the championships were canceled, the Lions were scheduled to compete in 3 events in finals Thursday night.

 

On Friday, the Lions were scheduled to compete in 3 more events:

Joao Santos (100 breast, #1 seed)

Alex Sobers (500 free, defending national champion)

Alex Sobers, Elder Oliveira, Thiago Rosa, Igor Dantas (800 free relay, #2 seed)

 

On Saturday, the Lions were scheduled to compete in 3 more events:

Joao Santos (200 breast, #4 seed)

Igor Dantas (100 free, #2 seed)

Alex Sobers, Thiago Rosa, Igor Dantas, Joao Thomas (400 free relay, #2 seed)

 

Head Swim Coach, Allen Gilchrest, commented: "We understand the NCAA's decision to cancel the national championships in order to help protect all NCAA athletes. We are thankful that we had a chance to participate in some of the National Championships and represent Emmanuel on the national stage. I am so proud of my team this season and we give God the Glory! GO LIONS!
