Men's Volleyball Wins Thrilling Five Setter

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College Men's Volleyball Team claimed their second conference win of the season with a thrilling five setter against Belmont Abbey College. After several tough losses on the road, the men broke the streak with a 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-7 win.

Saturday's match was a special night as the Lions hosted a Black Out match in recognition of Black History Month. In the United States, the month of February is observed as Black History Month or National African American History Month, and we use the month to remember the important contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout our nation's history.

As the match began, Emmanuel came out with more intensity than they have displayed in a while. With a .333 hitting percentage compared to the Crusaders -.133, the Lions dominate offense allowed them to close out set number one 25-21.

In the second set Emmanuel struggled to keep up. Halfway through set number two Emmanuel faced a 7 point deficit and could not dig themselves out of the hole. An attack error from the Lions gave set number two to the Crusaders. While the Lions kept up in the third set, they were outperformed in the last few point. At 22-22, a big kill from Ackeem West (#9) gave the Lions the edge, but the Crusaders hit back with a kill of their own. After a service ace the Lions were in a bad position and once again gave up the set with another attack error.

With everything on the line in the fourth set, the Lions gave it their all. Right Side Hitter Alejandro Robles (#14) started off the set with a kill for Emmanuel's 1st point. After giving up a few points, Manuel Melenciano had another kill and triggered a three point run for the Lions. Both teams continued to battle it out until a string of errors from the Crusaders gave Emmanuel their biggest lead of the set. Emmanuel went on to finish the set 25-21.

The fifth and final set was all Emmanuel as they carried their momentum over and rolled through the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey continued to struggle offensively and gave several points to Emmanuel. While the Lions only played to 15 in the final set, they put up an impressive 10 kills allowing Belmont Abbey only 1. After finishing off the Crusaders 15-7 in the final set, the Lions secured their second conference win of the season.

The Lions were led by Don Thompson with 13 kills and a .565 hitting percentage. Ackeem West and Alejandro Robles both tallied 6 blocks each.

Next up for the Lions is North Greenville University on Friday, Feb. 16th.
