Mobile, AL – The Emmanuel Men's & Women's Tennis Teams passed their pool play matches today, making to the semifinals of the tournament.
With a stellar performance in the first three matches, the Men's team clinched a clean passage to the knockout stage. After upsetting not only one higher ranked team, but two in back to back matches, the EC Lions will look to keep the momentum going tomorrow where they will face the Bluefield College Rams. Today, the Lions earned a third straight win at the tournament, now against the Colorado Christian Cougars. At the start of doubles, the Lions were looking extremely focused in the objective and kept pressing their opponents on all courts, especially with quick returns. But it was on court #3 where EC earned a first point with Canadas / Pereira, who kept their winning streak alive with a solid doubles game from start to finish for an unstoppable 8-0 win. On court #2, Sasaki / Jarry were also looking extremely solid and after an important break midway through the match, the Lions duo never looked back, putting EC ahead on the board even further with an 8-4 win. Lastly, on court #1, Alcacer / Romero were battling but the Cougars were determined to get at least one doubles point this morning. After long games, Emmanuel had several break chances at 6-6, but CCU was able to scratch the game at the very last second and eventually forcing a tie-breaker. Without losing their focus, the Lions played a key point after the changeover at 3-3 to finally close the match, 9-8, placing EC with a very nice lead of 3-0.
In singles, Emmanuel proved to be more comfortable than Colorado Christian, but it was the Freshman, Tom Jarry, who was able to take EC one step closer to the overall victory with a solid foundation from the baseline and always forcing the Cougar to hit defensive shots. The Lion clinched his singles with a 6-2 6-2 win. The clincher came, once again, by the hands of the Junior Enrique Alcacer, who was stepping on the gas pedal the whole time, always forcing the opponent to hit an extra harder shot. Alcacer stretched his winning streak to 14 with the 6-0 6-2 win today.
The Women's Tennis Team also advanced to the semifinals with a pair of wins earlier in the tournament, first against Bluefield College and then against Colorado Christian. The Lady Lions will have the tough mission of facing the #3 Dallas Baptists University Patriots for a spot in the final.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow at 10AM!
