HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Emmanuel College Men's Basketball Team took on Coker College in their third game of the season. With a 107-105 victory, the Lions came off with their first win.
The Lions had a slow start with several turnovers, falling behind 20-7. Nine minutes into the first half, Emmanuel began to make a comeback, then a three-pointer from Brandon Simpson(#4) and three more successful free throws put the team back in the game. With 8 minutes left on the clock, Colton Collins (#12) sunk his third three-pointer to put the Lions in the lead for the first time of the night. Coker continued to put up points as well, but the Lions held the lead at 58-56 going into half time.
When the men returned to the court Emmanuel continued to control the pace. At their largest lead, the Lions were up by 13. With five minutes remaining in the game, Coker finally began to make their push. While preventing Emmanuel from scoring, Coker had several successful drives and came within 1 point of Emmanuel at 99-98. The teams continued to exchange shots until a layup from Coker tied the game up with 8 seconds left on the clock. Under pressure The Lions were able to remain calm and collected, then a jump shot from Kurtis Robinson (#2) with 2 seconds left on the clock sealed the victory for Emmanuel 107-105.
The Lions will take the court again next Tuesday at Southern Wesleyan for their first conference match of the season.
